History & Mission

Hazelwood Family Medicine is a medical practice serving the needs of adults and adolescents throughout Western North Carolina. George W. Brown, MD, our founder practiced medicine for over 50 years before his death in 2014. In 2002, Dr. Brown’s son, Michael A. Brown, MD joined his father in serving our patients. We also have two Nurse Practitioners, Elizabeth Carmichael and Sarah Lipham. Together they bring a wonderful combination of knowledge and caring in order to serve your individualized needs.

It is our mission is to provide complete health care to the entire family through preventive maintenance care. Preventive Medicine is the most effective way to reduce the high cost of medical care. Hazelwood Family Medicine is committed in providing comprehensive medical care to people of all ages. It is designed to meet individualized needs of all families in our community.

We want to help individuals add years to their lives by empowering them to take control of their health. We provide aggressive, compassionate care to patients in a timely manner. Family practice is the medical specialty which provides continuing and comprehensive health care for the individual and family. It is the specialty in breadth which integrates the biological, clinical, and behavioral sciences. The scope of family practice encompasses all ages, both sexes, each organ system and every disease entity.

Blue Quality Physician’s Program

Hazelwood Family Medicine is applying for a certification with Blue Cross Blue Shield known as the Blue Quality Physician’s Program (BQPP). This program recognizes
practices and providers that demonstrate the ability to provide high quality medical services to their patients. As part of our application process, we’ve outlined
some of the ways we’re helping to improve healthcare for all of our patients.

Advanced Health Care Team

Hazelwood Family Medicine's Advanced Care Team supports the PCP in efforts to deliver effective patient centered care. An Advanced Care Team includes specialists
that coordinate and work together to ensure the highest quality of care is provided throughout our practice. ​Advanced Care Team members are available for ALL patients
in the practice, regardless of insurance.

Behavioral Health

Hazelwood Family Medicine incorporates the use of an on-site social worker to assist our patients in their psychological well being. Lynne Finger, LCSW, is a native to Haywood County. Her office is located at 1088 Brown Ave, Waynesville, NC. To schedule an appointment call 828-456-8183.

Addressing Social Determinants of Health

Hazelwood Family Medicine provides after-hours home visits for our patients who have limited access to medical care due to transportation and/or physical need. Please contact us at 828-456-2828 to request these services.

We have also identified several health needs that are especially common or concerning to our community’s patient population. To help educate our patients, Hazelwood Family Medicine hosts classes that are available to our patients throughout the year.

Low Glycemic Index - Healthy Carbs vs Bad Carbs

Description of Class: Join Carrie, CMA, and Chelsea RDN, LDN, at Hazelwood Family Medicine, for an hour-long educational session to explain the benefits of healthy food choices and weight management.
Purpose/Benefits: To educate our patients on the low-GI diet, including what it is, how to follow it and its benefits and drawbacks.
